Friday Eblast - July 30, 2021

Good Shepherd friends,

You may have seen that on Tuesday of this week, the CDC (The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) issued new masking recommendations related to reducing the impact of the Delta variant of COVID-19. In geographic regions with a substantial or high transmission rate, the CDC recommends that people, even those who are vaccinated, resume wearing masks indoors in public areas. In response, Nevada’s Governor Steve Sisolak likewise directed that those in Washoe County, a high-transmission region, wear masks indoors. Additionally, the City of Reno is now requiring all people, regardless of vaccination status, to wear a mask in indoor public settings in all City of Reno facilities.

While this is discouraging and frustrating news, it is not entirely unexpected. We will resume masking as we have before. In accordance with these directives, our Good Shepherd COVID Task Force recommends the following:
  • Worshipers are asked to wear masks over nose and mouth.
  • Worship leaders may unmask when standing at a distance from others during the portion they lead and then re-mask thereafter.
  • We will continue to offer communion by multiple means: Prepared cups as well as wafers or gluten-free crackers served by intinction.
  • We will discontinue our 10 a.m. coffee and fellowship time for now.
The Delta variant of COVID, its highly contagious nature, and the sharp increase in cases are another reminder to get vaccinated if you have not already done so. Visit NVCOVIDFighter.org to locate a vaccination site. Good Shepherd will continue to abide by these directives until conditions and public health officials indicate otherwise.
--Pastor Scott and the COVID Task Force

Power Washing Help Needed
Our property has gotten filthy over the last year, and we have multiple areas that need power washing. If you have a power washer and can commit to washing even one area, we’ll be so grateful! Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays are the best times (no one but staff is on the premises during the day). Give the office a call if you can help at 329-0696 or talk to me (Maribeth) on Sunday morning.

July 31 Hike – Summit Lake
Our next hike will be Summit Lake with a distance of close to 5 miles roundtrip and an elevation gain under 500 feet.  We are hoping there will be no smoke from fires in the area.  The hike begins at the Pacific Crest trailhead at Donner Pass.  The trail crosses under I-80 via a pedestrian tunnel, then winds up north and east through a partially shaded forest to Summit Lake.  There are some easy water crossings as the trail crisscrosses a seasonal creek which may be dry by now.  The trail is rocky in some spots as is typical of most Sierra hikes.  We will leave at 8:00 am from the parking lot at the corner of McCarran and MaeAnne near the McDonalds.  This will be a half day hike so bring a snack, water, and whatever else you may need – bug spray?  There may be some mosquitos at the lake.  Facilities are available at the trailhead.  See you Saturday, July 31.

Do you like to sing?!
Have you thought “Man, that Good Shepherd Choir looks like fun?”  Well, it is, and we’d love to have you join us.  We are always accepting new singers to our clan.  We meet on Sundays at 9:30 to prepare for worship at 11 every week.  Our kick off event is Friday, September 10, at 5 pm at the home of Pennie Kirk and Knute Knudson.  You can sing every Sunday, or some Sundays, whatever works with your schedule!  We’d love to have your voice join us!  You can fill out this form to let Jennie Tibben, our director, know of your interest https://forms.gle/2tRchT8b2Vhntixx7. Or you can email jennifertibben@gmail.com

A Reconciling in Christ Congregation

Friday Eblast - July 16, 2021

Hello wonderful congregation!

This is probably the longest eblast I have sent you in quite some time. It just shows how we are coming back to life with in-person events and working together for the health of our community and church (and having fun in the process). Please read (or even skim) through this eblast; there is something for everyone!

July 16 Worship – Pride Sunday!
Our synod’s new bishop, the Rev. Dr. Megan Rohrer, who began serving as bishop of the Sierra Pacific Synod on July 1, 2021, will be our preacher (by video) for July 18 worship services. The text for the sermon is from Mark 5:21-43, which is the story of Jairus and his daughter and the woman with the hemorrhage. Jesus crosses cultural boundaries as he brings healing to those who are isolated from their community. Pr. Scott will be presiding. You can join us for in-person worship at our 9am Contemporary Worship or our 11am Traditional Worship.  If you prefer, join us for our livestream worship at https://youtu.be/hSw33vuMI2E any time after 10:50am Sunday morning.  You can also go to https://www.youtube.com/c/GoodShepherdLutheranReno to find our livestreams and recordings any time.

And don’t forget – we’re kicking off Pride Week with the return of the potluck this Sunday! Help us celebrate Northern Nevada Pride Week!  Wear your tie-dyed shirt or colorful clothing to worship as we celebrate the return of the “Potluck.” Bring a colorful potluck dish to share for our morning brunch between worship from 10am-11am!

Reno Aces Ballgame – Deadline to order tickets is WEDNESDAY
Triple A baseball is back and going strong in the Truckee Meadows. Let’s go to a game together on Friday night, August 6. Tickets are $20 and order forms are available in the Welcoming Space. Just place your order form and check in the offering box or drop by the office.

New Collection for Mt. Rose School Starts Sunday
BACK TO SCHOOL!  ALREADY???  It's hard to believe that school starts in just a few weeks - August 9th!  As in past years, we've checked with Good Shepherd's neighborhood school, Mt. Rose Elementary, and they tell us that this year they are in need of black pants and leggings. For lots of reasons, many of their students don't have black pants which are part of the uniform they are to wear each day for school.

The pants don't need to be new . . . see what your children and grandchildren have that don't fit any more or visit your favorite thrift store.  All sizes are needed, for kids from kindergarten through 8th grade, size 6 to 16 and even some larger ones for those growing 7th and 8th graders. Black leggings are acceptable too, so some of them are needed as well.

If you’re not up to shopping, a monetary contribution is always an option.  Make your check payable to Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, earmarked for Mt. Rose, pop it in the offering box or mail it, and Judith Inskip will gladly do the shopping.

There will be a collection basket for the pants and leggings in the welcoming space on Sundays (July 18 and 25, and August 1) and outside the office door during office hours until August 2.

Let's help these youngsters fit in at school and feel that they belong. That's so important for their self-esteem and, that in turn, plays a large part in their success academically as well. Most of us are blessed to be able to provide that for our children.  Let's help those Mt. Rose kids feel that too!

Let’s Help Echo Loder School with Books!
Did you know that reading is a superpower? Did you know that YOU are a hero? COVID was pure Kryptonite to Echo Loder Elementary School.  Echo Loder is a small, underserved school right behind the old Park Lane Mall property. And their book budget has been beaten up badly. The educators there have put together a “Virtual Book Drive” over at Amazon to get some much needed materials together for this group of very special students. You may help by ordering one (or many!) books at the link.  Simply click, pick and hit “send” – Amazon will ship your gift directly to the school.  Please visit their Amazon Wish List at: https://amzn.to/3yQ6M0a.  Questions? Contact Andi Glover at 775.842.7604 or andi.glover@gmail.com.  “Every hero has a story – what’s yours?”

Help Needed for Dump Run!
We have a 6’ couch plus a loveseat and chair along with two 4-drawer file cabinets to dispose of. We have tried to donate these items and we’ve lucked out. We are in need of someone(s) to haul this stuff to the dump for us.  If you have a truck and can take even part of it, we’ll find a helper or two for the heavy lifting.

Thanks be to God for the Life of Tim Dean
Tim Dean died Wednesday, June 16 after suffering a significant stroke in May. At Good Shepherd Tim was active in the choir, hiking group, Refugee Mentor Team, and Tuesday Bible study. He was known for his sense of humor—he especially loved a pun. A memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd Thursday, June 24 at 3 p.m. with reception to follow. Your prayers are asked for Tim’s wife Sandi, their daughter Norma and her family, and daughter Michelle and her family. Condolence notes may be sent to Sandi at 1921 Clos Du Val Ct. in Reno, 89519. Memorial gifts in Tim’s name are invited to be made to the Endowment Fund of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Interest income from the endowment is used to award grants benefiting the Reno Sparks Community, ministries of the Lutheran Church, and special projects of Good Shepherd.

Thanks be to God for the life of Peggy Von Bargen
Long-time Good Shepherd member Peggy Von Bargen died Sunday, June 13. Peggy was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago. She and her friend and fellow teacher Joan Andrews moved to Reno in 1989 after both retired as elementary school teachers in New Jersey. In retirement, Peggy continued to be active as a teacher’s aide and mentor to children. Plans are being made for a memorial service at Good Shepherd in July.

Hikers!  Dates/Locations Have Been Changed!

* Hike Saturday, June 19, 2021 – Change in location
The RGJ says the high temperature on Saturday will be 100 degrees!  We decided it would be best to hike at a higher and cooler elevation, so will be doing the Upper Tamarack Lake trail.  We will still meet at 8:30 am in the Raley’s parking lot off Mt. Rose Highway in the vicinity of the McDonalds. The hike is shady, not as steep as the lower trail, and our destination will be lovely Tamarack Lake.  There are some spots where you’ll hear traffic noise, but this is offset by the other advantages of the trail.  We estimate that the round-trip distance is around 5 miles, and the elevation gain maybe 600 feet.  Any questions – call Grace Schoenfeld at 825-8355 or email at gschoenfeld550@gmail.com.

* Change in Date for Brown's Creek Hike to June 25
Because of the continuing hot weather, we’re changing the Brown’s Creek hike from a warm Thursday evening to a cooler Friday morning on June 25. The hike is approximately 5 miles roundtrip with 1,007 feet in elevation gain.  We’ll hike 1.3 miles up to the top of a ridge, then take a loop trail from there down to the creek.  We’ll meet at the Brown’s Creek trailhead at 8:30 am.  Take the Mt. Rose Highway going west and turn to the left on Joy Lake Road.  Proceed to the trailhead parking area which is on the left side of the road.  If you have any questions, send an email to Bob Mays at  nvsheephunter@yahoo.com
