Good Shepherd friends,
Between COVID-19 numbers sharply rising locally and the horrible smoke that blew back into Reno overnight, it’s hard to feel good about anything. For me, when I feel this way, I tend to pull out my gratitude journal and write down something good. I’d love to hear what you’d write in yours today so hit reply and let me know. I’ll start!
On Wednesday, we were graced with a visit from our new Sierra Pacific Synod Bishop, Dr. Megan Rohrer and their Communications Coordinator Catherine Slabaugh. Your Good Shepherd staff felt uplifted and hopeful by the conversation and the exchange of ideas. We’re in good hands with Bishop Megan and their staff.
Your turn! What’s good in your life today?
A message from Good Shepherd’s COVID Task Force
Our Good Shepherd COVID Task Force and Choir Director Jennie Tibben met Thursday evening, August 5, to discuss wise adaptations to implement following the sharp increase in cases due to the Delta variant of the virus. Following the updated CDC guidelines and the specific directives of Nevada’s Governor Sisolak, we have already required masks of all Good Shepherd worshippers. Our Task Force met to discuss other steps to take. Washoe County is rated a “high transmission” area. As of August 5, the 7-day moving average for new cases was 120/day, the highest it has been since January 2021. The test positivity rate is 13%, compared to 3.1% as recently as June 17.
These are the steps we will implement from the Task Force’s recommendations:
- We will continue to require masks of all worshipers, regardless of vaccination status.
- We will not be hosting fellowship time between services with food and drink.
- When the choir returns to the 11 a.m. service, its members will be masked and physically spaced.
- The Task Force is not comfortable with the resumption of Kids’ Community under current community health conditions, particularly since vaccination is not yet available for children under 12. We hope to plan special inter-generational events rather than gather in indoor classrooms. We’ll have more information about these plans as they develop.
- We will not host receptions with food and drink after memorial services.
- Small groups meeting at the church should plan on participants wearing masks.
The Delta variant of COVID, its highly contagious nature, and the sharp increase in cases are another reminder to get vaccinated if you have not already done so. Visit NVCOVIDFighter.org to locate a vaccination site. Children under 12 are not yet eligible.
Let us take these steps and other wise precautions so that we can continue to meet for worship and limited activities. Our Task Force will continue to monitor regional health conditions and public health directives and we will increase our opportunities as conditions allow.

Next Hike – August 14
On Saturday, August 14, we’ll be hiking from Tahoe Meadows up to Chickadee Ridge, then will continue south for a while. Much of the trail is shaded as we wind up through a forest to a stunning view of Lake Tahoe. It is uphill to the ridge, but after that the trail gently rises and falls. The starting elevation is 8,740 feet and the group will determine how far we’re going to hike. We’ll meet in the Raley’s parking lot (off Mt. Rose Highway) at 9:00 am near the McDonald’s. Bring water and a snack. This is an in-and-out hike and covers a portion of the Tahoe Rim Trail. It is also the starting point for the Good Shepherd Mile on the TRT, a 12 mile hike that we used to do every year. Grace Schoenfeld will be our leader.
